Drifting - 42 x 29.7cm
This is a watercolour and gouache artwork on 320gsm cold-press paper.
Drifting began as a study of some Spanish Iris flowers my partner picked for me - the rest of the painting about impulsively. This is my usual process- imagery comes first, and then I have to try and figure it out, something like having a dream then waking up confused. In hindsight, I like to interpret it like this: when we close our eyes to the world, for whatever reason, we don't just shut out what we choose to. We shut out everything with it, including the beauty. But even then, we cannot separate ourselves from the sensation of being alive. I like to think this is why the sunlight on her (my) skin is so vividly coloured. Because even though shutting out the beauty, she still feels the warmth.
